Although it may seem shocking nowadays, latrines were, in Roman times, public spaces where friends would meet to have a chat while  relieving themselves.
Seats were placed directly on top of the sewer that would quickly wash away any waste. The system guaranteed good hygienic conditions and  kept the area free from bad odours.
Underneath  users' feet ran a small water conduit. One would wipe oneself using a sponge stuck on the end of a stick.

One would wash one's hands at a small basin placed in the corner.
